Loss of a Member of Our BHS Community

Posted Date: 10/27/26 (03:00 PM)

Dear Families,

Earlier today, we informed staff throughout the District of very sad news regarding a beloved staff member at BHS. Jyree Bowens, a member of the BHS office staff, passed away as a result of what appears to be an event related to an underlying medical condition.

Jyree, who is also the sister of Jerbrel Bowens, Director of Visual and Performing Arts and Student Pathways, worked not only in the BHS office but was also involved in a variety of activities and the supervision of after-school events. She was widely regarded as exceptionally kind, thoughtful, and caring. Jyree was willing to do anything for anyone. Saying she was a light for many is both accurate and an understatement.

We are heartbroken for Jyree’s family and all of those who had the great fortune of knowing Jyree. This is a profound loss for so many.

While staff were informed today and provided initial support, we also want to make sure that the entire school community is supported as needed. Counseling supports are being provided at BHS and can be made available for any students and staff as needed. BHS students in need of support should feel free to come to the counseling center tomorrow and in the days that follow. Students in our other schools should see their teacher or counselor. Families can also reach out to their child’s teacher or principal, and we’ll make sure that support is provided.

Dr. Hall will be sending a separate communication to BHS students at around 3:30 p.m. It may be helpful for families to check in with their students this evening.

Resources for supporting children and adults in these situations can be found on our website.

Thank you for keeping the Bowens family and everyone impacted in our school community in your thoughts and prayers.
