The Driver and Traffic Safety Education program (DTSE) is available to currently enrolled high school students with or will have their Learner’s Permit or Driver’s License upon registration.
DTSE consists of classroom and driving sessions.
The fall session at Brighton High School will meet September 16 through November 15, 2024. Students have a Zoom lecture every Monday and Tuesday from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. They also have driving lessons two days a week. Students are divided into one of six driving groups:
▪ Monday and Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:00 pm (2 cars; 8 students)
▪ Monday and Wednesday from 5:00 to 6:30 pm (2 cars; 8 students)
▪ Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 5:00 pm (1 car; 4 students)
▪ Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 to 6:30 pm (1 car; 4 students)
Registrations are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students rank the driving times based on their preference and are informed which car they are assigned to within two days of registration. The fee for the class is $640. Students who take this class can earn two certificates:
The Pre-licensing Certificate (MV-278) is issued by the classroom instructor to students who have completed the portion of the DTSE program equivalent to the DMV-approved 5-hour licensing class. They are available upon student request once the pre-licensing portion of the classroom training is complete. The MV-278 is used to schedule a road test before DTSE course completion. The Student Certificate of Completion (MV-285) can be received upon completing the DTSE program. Successful completion depends on the student achieving a grade of 65 or better in classroom instruction and a 65 or better in driving instruction and meeting the 24-hour classroom and 24-hour laboratory course attendance requirements.
