New York State Driver Education

Driver & Traffic Safety Education (DTSE) in New York State is a course implemented via a partnership between the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The Driver Education course aims to educate current high school students (ages 16 and older) about appropriate driving skills and habits and taking a responsible role in the highway transportation/safety system. Course highlights include 24 hours of classroom instruction and 24 hours of behind-the-wheel training and observation. Students who satisfactorily complete the course can receive the MV-285: Student Certificate of Completion. This course is offered at Brighton High School (BHS) four times a year – fall, winter, spring, and summer. Brighton Central School District partners with a program coordinator and instructors who are Monroe One Educational Services (BOCES) employees. Dates for the next session are posted as soon as they are provided to BHS from BOCES. BHS students are enrolled on a first-come, first-served basis. You do not have to be a BHS student to sign up. If there is room in a car for non-BHS students after all BHS students have been assigned to a car, you will be contacted by Community Education to complete your enrollment. Prepare to register for this course by reading general information about the current session here. After you have read the general information, you can register for the class at brightonschools website. Questions? Please contact the Community Education office at mona_zamiarski@bcsd.org or 585-244-5200, ext. 5595.
