Porta Named Chemistry Teacher of the Year by Rochester ACS
The Rochester Section of the American Chemical Society recognized Brighton High School’s Jamie Porta as its High School Chemistry Teacher of the Year in October. The award recognizes local chemistry teachers for their dedication to students and colleagues; professional development in their field; membership in scientific or teaching organizations; and leadership. Mr. Porta was recommended for the award by BHS student Maria Shalaeva.
Mr. Porta has been in the classroom for 27 years. During this time, he has taught Regents Physics, Regents Chemistry, Principles of Chemistry, and AP Chemistry. Mr. Porta received the Empire State Teacher of Excellence Award in 2016, is part of the New York State Master Teacher Program, and was awarded the University of Rochester’s Singer Family Prize for Excellence in Secondary Education in 2025.
He served as coordinator of the science department for seven years and has been president of the Brighton Teachers Association for the last five years. Mr. Porta has been an avid club advisor and mentor to countless students over the years. Each year, he leads more than 30 students on a five-day backpacking, hiking, and canoe trip to the Adirondack Mountains. Mr. Porta also runs the BHS Outdoor Club, which has taken trips to the Rocky Mountains and Grand Cayman.
