Students Design Solar Ovens for Sustainable Cooking

Posted Date: 10/22/25 (2:25 PM)

Students in Brighton High School’s Energy and Sustainability classes recently created and tested their own solar ovens.

People around the world use electricity, gas, coal, and wood as heating sources. With decreasing access to the natural resources required for fuel, some are turning to alternative solutions that use the sun.

Students needed to design and build a solar oven capable of cooking a frozen pizza only using the power of the sun. They were able to use a cardboard box, aluminum foil, tape, hot glue, plastic wrap, construction paper, spray foam or foam board, metal flashing, and plexiglass.
