Posted Date: 02/18/26 (10:46 AM)

Brighton High School’s Black Student Union (BSU) hosted New York State Regent Adrian Hale for its Black History Month Assembly on Feb. 13.

Hale shared his experience growing up in Rochester before enlisting in the Marine Corps. He later graduated with an A.S. in liberal arts with distinction from Monroe Community College and a B.A. in political science from Yale University. Regent Hale went on to work for the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce in a variety of roles. He spoke about what it is to be an ally to others and caring for the well-being of all instead of just yourself.

BSU presented Regent Hale with the Truth and Action Recognition Award for continuing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s commitment to social justice, education, action, and community building.

Wardell Lewis, Director of the RIT Gospel Ensemble, performed the Black National Anthem at the start of the assembly.

Thank you to Regent Hale and Mr. Lewis for spending time with our students.
